PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a benzene derivative useful as a raw material for producing a liquid crystal material, medicine, agrochemical, etc.,. in a high yield by treating a specific difluorobenzene derivative with a base to give a carbanion and treating the carbanion with a difluoromethane derivative. SOLUTION: A compound of formula [R1 is H or a 1-15C alkyl; A1 to A3 are each a (substituted) trans-1,4-cylcohexylene, a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene or the like; Z1 to Z3 are each a single bond, CH2CH2 or the like; (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1; X is H, Cl, Br or I] is treated with (B) a base to give a carbanion, which is treated with (C) a compound of the formula CF2Y1Y1 (Y1 and Y2 are Cl, Br or I) to give (D) a compound of formula II (e.g. a compound of formula III, etc.). The compound of formula II is treated with a phenol derivative under an ordinary etherification condition to give a difluorobenzyl ether useful as a liquid crystal material in a high yield.
