PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid ester in high yield and high catalyst yield and capable of suppressing adhesion of Pd to a reactor by carrying out the dimerization of an o-phthalic acid diester in the presence of a catalyst obtained by using a powdery palladium salt having a specific surface area and a basic bidentate compound as the principal components, and sequentially adding these components. SOLUTION: 3,3',4,4'-Biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid tetra-ester is obtained by carrying out the dimerization of an o-phthalic acid diester in the presence of a catalyst obtained by using a powdery palladium salt having a specific surface area of >=0.5 m2/g, preferably 0.7-20 m2/g, for example, palladium acetate powder or the like, and a basic bidentate compound, for example, 1,10- phenanthroline or the like as the principal components, and sequentially adding at least one component of these two components.
