PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impede returning of paper of an upper layer part in an opposite paper feed direction so as to prevent generation of wedge shape in a tip end of a paper sheaf in the paper upper layer part, by giving return resistance force resisting against press return force acting in the paper in the upper layer part to the paper therein by a lock part. SOLUTION: This paper feeder has a paper feed means calling paper 18 loaded in a prescribed location successively from the uppermost part and friction separating this called paper 18 fed and a saw-shaped lock part 36 integrally provided with a paper retaining member 28 in a condition abutting to a rear end part upper surface of the paper 18 in a layered condition. This lock part 36, when press return force (p) tending to press return the paper 18 in an opposite direction to a paper feed direction acts relating to the paper 18 in an upper layer part fed after the paper 18 in the uppermost part, locks this paper so as to be hooked by a paper rear end in the upper layer part, and return resistance force P resisting against the press return force (p) is given to the paper 18 in the upper layer part by this lock condition, so as to impede returning of the paper.
