The sections are heated to a time-temperature profile which varies along the bed, each section reaching its peak temperature at a different time. A process to captures and disposes of process gases, effluent air or ambient containing a low concentration of an impurity. The impurity is first adsorbed by an active carbon granule bed forming a solid body. Subsequently, the granules are heated, releasing the impurity at a higher concentration as a gas which is then passed over a heated and much hotter catalytic surface. The carbon granule bed is sub-divided into sections, each one of which has an individually-controlled embedded heating element. During the desorption phase, the carbon bed is differentially heated in sections. An Independent claim is included for an appropriate assembly which can be mounted on the radiator of a conventional automobile.
