PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating composition which gives a coating film excellent in blister resistance during high-temperature drying and in chipping resistance by incorporating an alkylene oxide adduct of an alkylphenol-formalin condensate, a polyvalent metal complex, and an inorganic filler, each in a specified amount, into a copolymer latex having a specified gel content. SOLUTION: This composition is prepared by incorporating 0.1-5 pts.wt. alkylene oxide adduct of an alkylphenol-formalin condensate, 0.1-5 pts.wt. (in terms of a metal component) polyvalent metal complex (preferably an ammonia water solution of zinc carbonate or zirconium carbonate), and 50-300 pts.wt. inorganic filler (e.g. calcium carbonate) into 100 pts.wt. (in terms of solids) latex of a copolymer (e.g. a terpolymer of methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and methacrylic acid) having a gel content of 50 wt.% or higher. The composition is used preferably in a solid concentration of about 50 wt.% or higher and is applied preferably so that the dry film thickess is about 0.4-1.5 mm.
