The device is powered by non-rechargeable batteries, extending portability around the house. The radio telephone set comprises a handset (3) and a base unit (2) serving as a support for the handset. The base has fittings (16,18) for supporting the handset which has corresponding fittings (17) for attachment. Contact terminals are provided on the base (19a,19b) for connection to corresponding contact terminals (201,20b) on the handset, enabling the circuits of the two parts to be linked. Both the base unit and the handset have battery compartments (5,21) which are intended to accommodate non-rechargeable batteries (6,22). The telephone may be used in hands-free mode when it is placed on the support base, in which case it is powered from the batteries in the base, or in mobile mode in which it is powered by the batteries within the handset.
