PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a muffler that can surely prevent afterburning using a simple low-cost structure without having to lower its noise reducing effects. SOLUTION: This muffler comprises a cylindrical muffler body, whose interior is divided by a partition plate into a plurality of expansion chambers including an inlet expansion chamber connected to a gas inlet pipe and an outlet expansion chamber connected to a gas outlet pipe. The gas inlet pipe opens tangentially to the inlet expansion chamber. The partition plate between the inlet expansion chamber and the downstream expansion chamber has gas passage at off-center positions.
