PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat exchanger in which heat transfer efficiency can be enhanced for gas containing particles. SOLUTION: The heat exchanger has a plurality of pipes extending in a direction intersecting the flowing direction of gas containing particles arranged such that the pipes in adjacent stages, where the pipes are arranged along the direction substantially orthogonal to the direction of gas flow, are shifted from each other. When the distance between adjacent pipes in the same stage is Sn and the diameter of the pipe is d, the shift S of pipes in adjacent stages is set to satisfy a relation d/2<=-S<Sn/2. Since particles slipping downward from pipes in the upstream side stage collide against the upstream side surface of pipes in an adjacent downstream side stage, particles deposited on the upstream side surface of pipes in the adjacent downstream side stage can be removed.
