PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a television receiver which can automatically display an optimum picture corresponding to a video source. SOLUTION: A video source discrimination circuit 2 samples the prescribed position of a video signal, analyzes it by a microcomputer and discriminates what type of video source the video signal is. The signal is sampled by limiting only to one of an odd field and an even field. A video signal processing circuit 3 digitally aspect-converts a picture displayed on an image receiving tube 5 or operating the waveform of deflection by a deflection circuit 4 so that the optimum picture corresponding to the video source is obtained, based on the discriminated result.
