PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head manufacturing method capable of easily achieving good reproducing characteristics by reducing the adverse effects of mechanical polishing during the formation of a sliding surface. SOLUTION: In the magnetic head manufacturing method using a magnetic tape as a recording medium, and having a magneto-resistance effect head element 11, a thin-film laminated structure is formed, in which the head element 11 is held between a pair of hard nonmagnetic substrates 13 through a soft magnetic body 12, a sliding surface 10 with a magnetic tape is formed on one end surface of the thin-film laminated structure by mechanical polishing, and then the sliding surface 10 is subjected to chemical polishing.
