PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance and low-cost synchronous reluctance motor which has radially two layers of permanent magnets in its rotor, a large reluctance torque, a large total torque, and a small torque ripples. SOLUTION: When the circumferential center lines of respective slits 12b and 12c of a rotor 12 coincide with the center lines of respective poles of a stator 11, the total magnetic flux of outer permanent magnets 13a, close to the surface of the rotor 12 facing the stator 11, is larger than or equal to the total magnetic flux value of inner permanent magnets 13b, far from the surface of the rotor 12 facing the stator 11, when currents are not applied to stator windings.
