PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device which makes it possible to excellently observe video by making the luminous flux from a video display element always pass through the pupil of the eye without using any mechanical driving means. SOLUTION: The video display device includes the video display element 21, a projection optical system which projects its video, a light source 23 which lights up the video display element 21, and a lighting optical system 24. The projection optical system has a reflecting surface 22' and the light source 23 is constituted by arranging a plurality of light source elements so that irradiation with illumination light can be selected by areas. The light source 23 is arranged almost at the conjugation position by the lighting optical system and projection optical system to the pupil position of the observer's eyeball E and a plurality of light sources can light the video display element 21 selectively with the illumination light of an area corresponding to the position conjugate to the pupil of the observer's eyeball.
