PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain stable display characteristics by preventing the degradation in quality of the display contrast, the display density, etc., even in the case a change of the pressure difference arises between the inside and the outside of a space formed between a display substrate and a non-display substrate. SOLUTION: A prescribed voltage is applied by a voltage applying means 20 between a first electrode provided on a display substrate 12 and a second electrode provided on a non-display substrate 14. A sealing means 16 is provided in the circumferential edge parts of the display substrate and the non-display substrate to not only hold the display substrate and the non-display substrate together with a prescribed gap between them but also form a prescribed closed space 18 between the display substrate and the non-display substrate. Particle groups 30 and 32 are sealed in the closed space and move between the first electrode and the second electrode by an electric field generated by the voltage applied from the voltage applying means. The pressure in the closed space is adjusted with a pressure adjustment means 24.
