PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable emission spectrometer capable of preventing an electric shock during spark/arc discharge. SOLUTION: A metal plate 14 serving as a contact conductor electrically connected so as to become the same electric potential as that of a probe 2 fixed on a grounding potential is placed at the upper part of the probe and a microswitch 15 is attached at the lower part of the metal plate 14. Only when the metal plate 14 is pressed on a sample 17 and kept in the same electric potential, the microswitch 15 actuates a power switch 7 composed of a relay is switched on by a control circuit 13, an output from a spark/arc power supply circuit is applied to an ignition electrode 9 and a contact conductor 10 in the probe 2 through an electric power line 11 to enable the spark/arc discharge. As contact pressure between the sample 17 and the metal plate 14 decreases, the microswitch 15 returns to a nonoperating state. Then the power switch 7 is switched off by the control circuit 13 and the spark/arc discharge is stopped, which forestalls the electric shock. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
