PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the life of a furnace thickness measuring device of a waste gasification fusion furnace, etc., and to improve the reliability of the device. SOLUTION: The method of protecting the furnace thickness measuring device is characterized by a step of spraying water toward a wire material 5 such as a link chain from which a weight 4 for measuring the furnace thickness is suspended in measuring the furnace thickness, or a step of covering the wire material 5 with a protective material such as a ceramic fiber tape or sleeve, or a step of covering the wire material 5 with the protective material such as the ceramic fiber tape or sleeve and at the same time, spraying water toward the wire material 5 in measuring the furnace thickness.
