PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a respiration detecting method for a chair type massager which does not cause erroneous detection even while operating the massager. SOLUTION: In the respiration detecting method for the massager, pulsing caused by respiration is detected as a load change by an air bag or distortion gauge installed at a place to be applied with the load of a human body in the chair type massager having a massage unit provided vertically movably along backrest. In such a respiration detecting method, the respiration is detected in a portion where the load fluctuation of the massage unit is a little such as in the linear portion of a rail during rolling motions. Otherwise, the respiration is detected when the motion of therapeutic elements of the massage unit is slower than a respiratory cycle (during the rolling motions) or when the motion is quicker (during patting motions).
