PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To trace a target precisely when there is an object whose characteristic quantity is similar to the target to be traced or a background and when the distribution of the characteristic quantity is changed. SOLUTION: A reference image and a target region on the reference image are specified in an image list and the image is converted to an HSV image expressed by the HSV expression of the hue, saturation and lightness. Then a histogram of the saturation component and the lightness component on the target region in the HSV image is prepared, and the pixel for removing noise from the minimum threshold and the maximum threshold based on the saturation component and the lightness component is determined by using the histogram. After that, a histogram of the hue component and the saturation component in the target region and a region including the target region is prepared from the image after the noise is removed, and the distribution of the posterior probability of the hue component and the saturation component is found based on these histograms. Then based on the posterior probability distribution, a probability distribution image is prepared, and the target region is specified by using the probability distribution image and the target region and updating the target region on the image.
