PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus and a communication method for omitting useless communication intended to the communication other party requesting unacceptable service by using infrared communication, suppressing electric power then generated and further causing no unexpected operation and no error condition in an apparatus of the communication other party, thus enabling highly reliable communication. SOLUTION: At the first reception of information that comes from a host and is in accordance with a predetermined infrared communication protocol, a type of the host is discriminated. Then, at the second reception of information that comes from the host and is in accordance with a predetermined infrared communication protocol according to the result discriminated, it is determined whether responding to the host or not, and a response is made to the host in accordance with the determined result.
