PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device capable of suppressing the occurrence of a spot pattern, without causing the utilization efficiency of the light emitted from a diffraction optical element to reduce, and achieving the downsizing and space-saving thereof, and to provide a projector. SOLUTION: The light source device 1 for generating illuminating light for illuminating an object illumination area on a prescribed surface to be irradiated includes a light source 2 that emits a light; a superimposing illumination element 4 that superimposing the light beams emitted from the light source 2 so as to irradiate the object illumination area S with the light beams; an optical path conversion means 3 that is disposed on an optical path between the light source 2 and the superposing illumination element 4 and converts the optical path of the light emitted from the light source 2 and make the light whose optical path is converted incident on the superimposing illumination element 4; and a moving means 15 that moves the optical path conversion means 3.
