1328963 Bonding metal parts BITUMEN INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Sept 1970 [24 Sept 1969] 46915/69 Addition to 1251377 Heading B3V Metal parts are bonded together by applying to at least a portion thereof a solid heat-softenable composition comprising a thermoplastic polyamide present in excess of-15% by wt. of the composition, epoxidized material, e.g. epoxidized soya bean oil, and finely divided filler material which comprises > 67% by wt. of the composition. The composition is such that little or no reaction occurs when stored at normal room temp. and the composition has a softening point (Ring and Ball) > 280‹ F. The solid layer of the composition is softened by induction heating. Then portions of the same or different parts are placed in register with at least some of the composition and the parts are pressed together with the softened adhesive composition between them. The parts may be of aluminium or steel, e.g. for use in the manufacture of vehicle doors. The parts to be bonded may be in overlapping relation with one another. The composition may be applied as a self supporting net or tape which may be coated with a tacky adhesive. The polyamide may comprise dimerized linoleic acid/ethylene diamine reaction products.
