[Also in Divisions A3 and F2] An energy converter for placing in series etween a vehicle, anchor-point and. a passenger safety belt or slidable seat, comprises a drum 10 on which is wound a cable 12 to which the belt or seat is attached, an adjustable multi-disc brake 16, 17 between the drum and its hub 15 and a. coupling element 23 splined to the hub and having teeth which may be selectively disengaged from a toothed disc 24 on the converter housing for free rotation of the drum and hub within the housing. The hub is normally rigid with the housing through the element 23 which is biased by a spring 26 into engagement with the disc 24. The brake comprises alternate discs 16, 17 splined to the drum 18 and to the hub 19, and compressible to set the force at which the drum clips on the hub, by a plate spring 21 under the action of a nut 20. Depression of a projection 32 on the coupling element 23 releases the toothed coupling and any unwound cable 12 may then be rewound either by a rewind spring 28 or by a handle 33. The drum may be radially extended as shown in dotted lines, to house the wound safety belt.</p> |
