The cobalt salt may be used in combination with a chromium salt and/or a copper salt whence the catalytic layer also will contain chromium oxide and/or copper oxide, up to 60 parts by weight of chromium salt and/or copper salt being used per 100 parts by weight of cobalt salt. As exemplified, an aqueous solution containing cobalt nitrate (Example I) or cobalt nitrate and chromium nitrate (Example 2) or cobalt nitrate and copper nitrate (Example3) is applied to a sheefed bundle of glass filaments or an aqueous solution containing nitrates of cobalt, chromium and copper is applied to a woven cylinder of glass filaments (Examples 4 and 5), which cylinder may be supported on a net-like cylinder of fine metal, for example steel or stainless steel, wires (Example 5), the resulting structure in each case being heated at 400‹C in air or an inert gas, for example nitrogen, or a reducing gas capable of neutralizing the gaseous products of nitrate decomposition. Acetates may be used instead of nitrates.
