<p>Process for giving an immediate regular supply of hydrogen gas consists of dropping an acid reactant on to Al (alloy). Specif., the reactant is hydrofluoric acid contg. an agent to increase the rate of attack in the cold, pref. mercuric chloride, and an agent to reduce the rate of attack at high temps., pref. nickel chloride. The Al, or an Al alloy contg. 3-5% Mg, is immersed in an aq. liq. contg. an anti-gel (glycol) and a corrosion inhibitor, which liq. serves to dilute the added HF. Appts. for carrying out the process consists of a vessel contg. the reactant mounted above a vessel contg. the metal, a connecting tube allowing drop by drop addn. of reactant, means of opening and closing the connection, an outlet for hydrogen and means of controlling the addn. of reactant according to the press. in the lower vessel. Use to the appts. avoids the danger of explosion, present when bottles of hydrogen are used. Compared with existing chemical processes generation is more regular over a large temp. range and is initiated rapidly by a simple operation.</p> |
