The panel is made by applying the hardenable material while one or both of layers 3, 4 is unattached (the zones corresponding to the desired attachment holes but being of appreciably larger diameter and each embracing a plurality of cells in layer 1), assembling all the layers and hardening the material; a hole of the desired size and shape is then pierced through the centre of each zone 11. The cellular layer may be of Al alloy. The hardenable material is preferably a thixotropic resinous composition, e.g. 250 : 100 finely ground silica-epoxy resin, and layers 3, 4 may contain epoxy resin. The hardenable material may be introduced into the zones 11 through an apertured template, which defines the zones, by means of a piston-type injection gun whose nozzle matches the apertures (see Fig. 4, not shown), the layer 1 lying on a slab or on the lower facing layer. After assembly, the template 7 is placed on the panel and holes are drilled through the zones 11 by a drilling gun 12 with a central bit 13. As illustrated, a hole shaped to receive a screw is formed. The edge portions of layer 1 may be milled away and replaced by thixotropic material. |
