THERMOPLASTIC COPOLYMERS OF ACRYLONITRILE

Acrylonitrile and styrene are copolymerised in the depicted apparatus. The weight ratio is 68 - 95% by weight of acrylonitrile to 32 - 5% by weight of styrene. The process comprises feeding acrylonitrile and styrene continuously into the polymerisation reaction under equilibrium conditions at most in an aqueous emulsion in the presence of a diene elastomer, discharging the resulting latex likewise continuously and isolating therefrom the unconverted monomers and the polymer product. The polymerisation temperature is between 0 and 100 DEG C and the atmosphere in the reaction vessel is inert under the reaction conditions. The copolymers produced have excellent and predictable physical properties.
