A process and apparatus are claimed for washing continuous freshly-spun viscose filaments with warm water with a water spray of a pH value of 7.0-7.5 at a temperature of 50-75 degrees C and, before spraying, the filaments have been pre-washed in a bath of water with a pH value of at least 1.5 and a temperature of at least 30 degrees C but below the temperature of the water spray. The process ensures that heavy waste matter is removed from the viscose filaments, with a minimum water consumption, in a compact and simple unit.
