In operation, the data on the received ticket is read and stored, the stored data is displayed, instructions to erase part of the data and/or to add further data are set up and then, upon generation of a print ticket signal, the new ticket is issued bearing the stored data with the exception of the parts to be erased and/or with the addition of the further data. As described, each ticket is a betting ticket and bears fixed information (e.g. date, name of racecourse and variable information in the form of several bets). Both types of information are both printed on and magnetically encoded upon the ticket. To erase a bet, the machine operator either punches a hole in the ticket alongside the bet prior to feeding the ticket in the machine, or feeds the ticket into the machine and depresses a button alongside the relevant bet on the display of the ticket data, or operates the machine to move an arrow until it aligns with the relevant displayed bet and then depresses an "erase" button. A bet to be added is keyed in. The stored data, together with the erase and add instructions, is then passed to a computer, which updates its betting data store and calculates the stake value of the new ticket and generates a "print new ticket" signal. The new ticket bears the fixed information of the old ticket and the revised variable information. The ticket issuing mechanism includes a cutter to sever a ticket length from a blank web, first and second type wheels for the fixed and variable information respectively and magnetic write and read heads, Fig. 6 (not shown).
