PURPOSE:To prepare a highly pure alkenylphenol, by carrying out liquid phase cleavage reaction of a diphenylolalkane in the specific reaction medium in the presence of a basic catalyst, while rapidly distilling off the produced alkenylphenols. CONSTITUTION:Phenols and alkenylphenols are almost quantitatively prepared by carrying out liquid phase cleavage reaction of a diphenylolalkane, e.g. alkylnaphthalenes, etc., having a melting or softening point of <=150 deg.C and a vapor pressure of <=50mmHg at 250 deg.C, at 150-250 deg.C at 50-100mmHg, in the presence of a basic catalyst. The reaction is carried out by feeding the diphenylolalkane continuously to the system at a feed rate to keep the concedntration of the diphenylolalkane to <=30wt.%, and continuously distilling off the cleavage reaction product. EFFECT:The heat transfer efficiency is improved and therefore a large amount of the energy required for the cleavage reaction and the distillation of the produced alkenylphenol can be easily supplied. Local heating is avoided and the cleavage reaction temperature is easily controlled. |
