The present invention provides a process for preparation of a mixture of lower chlorides of titanium, comprising titanium trichloride (TiCl) and titanium dichloride (TiCl), including the steps of heating at least one metal salt selected from the group consisting potassium chloride, sodium chloride, calcium chloride, lithium chloride and magnesium chloride at a temperature of about 900 to about 1400°C to obtain a molten metal salt; mixing titanium tetrachloride (TiCl) and hydrogen (H) as a reducing agent to obtain a mixture; and passing the mixture through the molten metal salt at a temperature of about 900 to about 1400°C and sub-atmospheric pressure which is lower than 1 kg/cmto obtain a reduced mass comprising a mixture of lower chlorides of titanium, wherein the content of titanium dichloride in the mixture of lower chlorides of titanium is at least 74%. The present invention also provides a process for preparation of titanium metal from the reduced mass comprising the said mixture of lower chlorides of titanium. |
