The title compds. (I) was prepd. by treating catechol[II with 0.6-2 mol CH2:CMeCH2Cl in an aprotic solvent in the presence of 0.5-2g-atom M2CO3 or MHCO3(M = Na or K). Thus, adding 0.15 mol CH2:CMeCH2Cl to a mixt. of 0.10 mol II and 0.05 mol K2CO3 in N-methylpyrrolidone over 3h at 90≦̸C and heating for an addnl. lh and 35 min gave 85% I and 11% diether, based on II converted(80%).
