Rising spindle wedge gate valve - has back stop on spindle with labyrinth half and convex face engaging other half and cone face in cover

The spindle seal is intended for a wedge gate (1,2) valve with rising spindle (10) and back stop (5,9) operating in the fully open position. The seal comprises a stellite or similar face (9) and labyrinth grooves in the cover and a corresponding face (7) and labyrinth grooves (6) at the upper end of a larger-dia. back stop member (5) integral with the lower end of the spindle. The annular face (7) has an upwardly convex contour whilst the corresponding annular face (9) in the cover has an upwardly converging conical contour surrounding the spindle. The curvature radius of the contour is preferably between 7 and 9 mm whilst the cone (9) is tangential to this contour.
