A bag (102) with a closed lower and an open upper end is suspended vertically on a suspension device (24, 30) and is filled with particulate materials near to a predetermined net weight. The suspended bag (102) is weighed by a weighing device (22) while its contents are being filled. When the predetermined net weight is reached, filling is stopped and the upper end of the bag (102) is welded. Advantageously, the bag material (100) can be supplied continuously and can be guided through a shaping device (26) in order to form a tube of bag material. In this shaping device (26), the sides and the lower end of a portion of the bag material (100) are welded to form a bag (102), open at the top, which is connected to a source of particulate material. <IMAGE>
