In a method for producing an elongated embossing, the blank being embossed is introduced into position against a counter punch. A roller presses the blank against the counter punch under rolling displacement. The blank is fed in steps in the form of a continuous band and the roller is displaced between each step while pressing the blank against the counter punch in the direction opposite the feed direction of the blank. A machine for carrying out such an embossing contains a counter punch 8 and a pressing element 24 working against it.
