-36 Abstract METHOD, SYSTEM AND APPARATUS FOR DETERMINING ABNORMAL STRUCTURES OF BIOLOGICAL TISSUE LAYERS OF A RETINA A method of determining abnormal structures of biological tissue layers of a retina, is disclosed. An image representing the biological tissue layers is received. The image comprises a plurality of depolarising regions. A plurality of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) regions is identified from the plurality of depolarising regions based on an arrangement of the 10 depolarising regions within the received image. For each retinal pigment epithelium region, a portion of the retinal pigment epithelium region is detected based on depolaristion by examining polarisation values within bounds of the retinal pigment epithelium region using smoothness constraints, the smoothness constraints being determined independently of other retinal pigment epithelium regions, the detected portion being associated with a base line for 15 determining abnormal structures of the retina within the retinal pigment epithelium region. Abnormal structures of the retina are determined by determining, for each retinal pigment epithelium region, positions of the detected portion relative to the associated base line.
