A stop device for a travelling trolley of an overhead conveyor has a fixed stop, with which a stop element connected to the travelling trolley can be brought into positive engagement, thereby retaining the travelling trolley, and which is coupled to a release device freeing the stop element. So that the stop device can be mounted in a running rail at any location without much labour, with a simple operationally reliable design being ensured at the same time, and in order to prevent excessive stress on its parts, the arrangement is such that the fixed stop is mounted pivotably about a horizontal pivot axis on a rigid bracket fastened releasably to the running rail, and that the mounting of the fixed stop has an elastic buffer cushioning it.
