NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I [X is halogen, OH, nitroxy, or -O-Y-R; Y is carbonyl, or sulfonyl; R is (phenyl-substituted) lower alkyl, (phenyl-substituted) lower alkenyl, or (lower alkyl-substituted) phenyl]. EXAMPLE:2-Iodomethyl-5,5-dimethyl-cyclo-2-hexenone. USE:An antitumor agent. PREPARATION:A 2-carboethoxymethyl-5,5-dimethyl-cyclohexene-1,3-dione shown by the formula II is reacted with oxalic acid chloride in anhydrous benzene to give a compound shown by the formula III, which is reductively dechlorinated to give a compond shown by the formula IV (Z is Et). This compound is then hydrolyzed in alkali, and the obtained compound is reacted with a halogen or halogenating agent to give a compound shown by the formula I where X is halogen.
