PURPOSE:To grasp intuitively an unused storage capacity by displaying the proportion of the unused storage capacity to the overall storage capacity on a display device like a linear level meter. CONSTITUTION:The track number and the sector number of the present position of a head HD, the number of sectors in one track, and the memory capacity of one sector are detected from data read into a RAM2 and are stored in the RAM2. A multiplying means 11 multiplies said number of tracks and memory capacity. A multiplying means 12 multiplies the output of the means 11 and the number of tracks preceding the track of the head position to calculate the overall memory capacity ending with the track preceding the track of the head position. A multiplying means 13 multiplies detected values of means 4 and 6 to calculate the memory capacity from sector ''0'' of the track of the head position to the sector preceding the sector where the head is placed. An adding means 14 adds said outputs to calculate the used memory capacity. The overall memory capacity in a ROM3 is used to calculate the unused memory capacity, and its proportion is displayed on a meter ME by %.
