A process for hydrolysing polymers having a chain contg. units of an ester of an unsatd. alcohol comprises mixing the molten polymer with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst, using an alcohol/catalyst combination chosen from (i) dibutyl tin dilaurate and an aliphatic prim. alcohol chosen from mono-alcohols, diols, polyols and mixts. of these and (ii) NaOEt, KOEt, LiOEt and/or tetrabutylammonium hydroxide and an aliphatic prim. alcohol chosen from monoalcohols with more than 4C, diols, polyols and mixts. of these; with the proviso that the mol. ratio between functional alcohol group and ester gp. to be hydrolysed is less than 3. |
