PURPOSE:The residual fraction after catalytic cracking of specific pertroleum heavy oil is subjected to 2-stage heat treatment to enable high-efficiency production of pitch which can be used as a starting material for carbon materials and carbon fibers of high tensile strength. CONSTITUTION:(A) 100pts.wt. of light oil obtained by desulfurization of crude oil and subsequent distillation under reduced pressure and (B) 5-50pts.wt. of residual oil after crude oil desulfurization and topping, are combined and subjected to catalytic cracking. Then, the light fraction is removed from the resultant residual oil and the residual pitch is subjected to the first-stage heat treatment at 400-450 deg.C under a pressure of 5-50mmHg, then to the second- stage heat treatment at 450-500 deg.C under pressure of 0.5-5mmHg to give the objective pitch.
