PURPOSE:To efficiently perform methane fermentation, by using N-acyllactam compound as a main component. CONSTITUTION:An N-acyllactam compound represented by formula I (wherein n is 1 or 2) or a salt thereof is used as a methane fermentation promoter. The use amount thereof is pref. 0.01-0.1pts.wt. of 100pts. of an org. substance. By this method methane fermentation can be efficiently performed.
