The invention relates to a method for thickening aqueous solutions by freezing out water from the aqueous solution. It is proposed to bring about heat exchange of the solution alternately in one of two heat exchangers with coolant cooled by melted ice, so that water is frozen out from the solution. Meanwhile, the heat exchanger which at that time is not in heat exchange with the solution has warmed coolant flowing through it, so that the water frozen out is melted. The melted water is drawn off from the heat exchanger and used as melted ice for cooling the coolant.
