A liquid ring vacuum pump (1) is equipped, as a tandem pump (4), with a centrally arranged drive part (2) and in each case one liquid ring pump unit (5, 6) of approximately the same construction at the two ends of said drive part. With such a liquid ring vacuum pump in tandem design having two smaller pump units with higher speed, considerably improved running properties with the same capacity are achieved compared with using a single, larger pump unit with limited lower speeds, as hitherto. In this case, auxiliary bearing-like shaft sliding bearings (7 and 8) are provided at least at both sides of the drive part (2) and, during operation, a minimum speed of the drive part (2) of about 1400 rpm is provided for. Furthermore, the drive rotor (9) of the drive part (2) is constructed as a hydrodynamic bearing and the two liquid ring pump units (5 and 6) are arranged so that any axial thrusts occurring at them counteract one another (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
