Binders (I) comprise mixt. of (A) a polyvinyl acetal (B) 1-300 pts. wt. per 100 pts. wt. (A), organic cpd. contg. (I) carbodi-imide and/or uretoneimine gps. and (ii) blocked isocyanate gps., and opt. (C) conventional additives and auxiliaries. Prepn. of coatings on wires is effected by coating with (I) then hardening at above 80 deg.C. Heat-resistant substances, partic. metal wires, have varnish coating produced by applying a (I) then hardening. (A) is a polyvinyl formal. (B) contains 0-25 wt.% carbodi-imide gps. (calculated as -N=C=N-), 0-30 wt.% uretoneimine gps. (calculated as structural unit of empirical formula C2N3O) where sum of carbodi-imide and uretoneimine gps. (calculated as -N=C=N-) is 0.5-25 wt.%, and 1-25 wt.% blocked NCO gps. (calculated as NC0).
