The externally threaded neck (7) of a container holding a substance which may give off a gas is fitted with a screw cap holding a resilient sealing disc. Projecting from the rim (4) of the container neck are teeth, held in contact with the sealing disc when the screw cap is fitted. When the pressure increases due to the released gases, the disc is deformed against the teeth, allowing the gases to pass and escape at the screw threads (3). The teeth can be triangular (11) or sinusoidal (12). Alternatively, rounded depressions (13) can be incorporated, leaving intermediate flat parts. Gas escape can be assisted by a gap across the external screw threads. The disc can be of plastics foam.
