The safety rail (19) is held above the deloyed tailgate hoist (17) on parallel supports (24, 33), with one of the supports (24) linked to a servo cylinder drive (30) which raises and lowers the rail. The second support (33) comprises a second servo cylinder which enables the rail to be swung up (Z) to allow fork lift access. The rail, and its support linkage lies flat on the tailgate when not in use. In the raised position is prevents tall loads from tipping off.
