Method of preventing spontaneous combustion when storing crushed coal which contains sulphur in the form of pyrites, FeS2, in a content exceeding 3% by weight and moisture in a content exceeding 10% by weight. The pyrites is oxidized by atmospheric oxygen and forms sulphur trioxide, which combines with water and forms sulphuric acid. Oxidation and, as a result, spontaneous combustion are prevented by the oxygen in the cavities which are present in the coal store being replaced with an inert gas. The process is characterized in that a fine- grain carbonate, in the form of crushed or ground limestone or dolomite having a grain size of less than 0.3 mm, is mixed with the coal such that the sulphuric acid which is leached out of the moist sulphur-containing coal is neutralized, and carbon dioxide, which displaces the air from the cavities, is formed, and in that the carbon dioxide is retained in the cavities as a result of ventilation of the coal store, or other supply of new atmospheric oxygen to the cavities, essentially being prevented by the coal store being sealed at the bottom and at the sides. |
