To deploy an inflatable member, such as an occupant restraint safety bag (12) in a motor vehicle, a liquid propellant (52) is expelled from a storage reservoir (32) into a reaction chamber (14) through ports (58) created at frangible pressure points in the reservoir wall and ignited by detonation of an explosive charge (56) to generate a non-toxic, bag inflating gas by exothermic reaction.
