Aq. copolymer dispersions (I) contg. 45-55 wt.% solids are prepd. by emulsion polymerisation as follows: (a) A mixt. of 75-95 pts. wt. 1-10C alkyl (meth)acrylates (II) (20-80 wt.% (IIa) with water-solubility not above 2 g/l and 20-80 wt.% (IIb) at least 10 g/l), 5-25 pts. wt. unsatd. soluble monomers (III) (25-100 wt.% as unsatd. acids), 500-1000 pts. wt. water, and 0.5-10 pts. wt. emulsifier is polymerised at 50-80 deg.C with an initiator; (b) When the conversion reaches 50-99%, 500-1700 pts. wt. of a mixt. of 70-1000 wt.% vinyl chloride 0-30 wt.% 2-18C satd. vinyl esters (IV), and 0-1.5 wt.% polyunsatd. monomer (V) of solubility not above 5 g/l, is introduced as an emulsion at pH 4.5-6.5, along with ethylene at 40-80 bar; (c) By time (b) at the latest, 10-50 pts. of an inert organic substance (VI) with solubility 10 power -3 200 g/l and mol. wt. not above 1000 is added.
