An input-output device (1) controls the input and output of data to or from external points (4, 5) in an system with a separate memory and input/output locations and a common address bus. It contains a memory (10) for data for transfer to or received from the external points with addresses (A19-A0) associted with the memory locations. A controller (40) with a holding device for control data, with addresses (A11-A0) associated with the input/output location, reacts to the control data by controlling the reading and writing of data from or to the memory. A signal descriptor (60) receives a signal indicating, whether a received address is in the memory or input/output location. The memory and controller are selectively activated accordingly. ADVANTAGE - Improved processing efectivity, and increased vol. of data traffic.
