Moulding compsns. based on thermoplastic aromatic polyamides obtd. by catalysed melt polycondensation of HOOC.Ar.COOH with H2N.Ar'.NH2 or 200-400 deg. C contain diphenyl cpds. of formula (I). Ar = 1,3- or 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-, 1,5-, 2,6- or 2,7- naphthylene, -pC6H4.Zn.pC6H4- or -C6H4.Y.C6H4.X.C6H4.Y.C6H4-; Ar' = -C6H4.Y.C6H4.X.C6H4.Y.C6H4-; X = -SO2- or -CO-; Y = -O- or -S-; Z = -O-, -S-, -SO2-, -CO-, -C(R)2-; R = H or 1-4C alkyl; n = 0 or 1; k = -S-, -SO-, -SO2-, -O-, -CO- or -C(R")2-; R' = H, -CpH2p+1, -C6H4(R") or -C6H4(OR"); R" = H or -CpH2p+1; n1 and n2 = 0 or 1 (same or diff.); and p = 1-10. (I) is pref. diphenylsulphane or 4,4'-diphenoxydiphenylsulphone. The compsn. pref. contain 99.5-40 (esp. 98-70) wt.% of the dramatic polyamide. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compsns. can be used as mouldings fibres, films or coatings, the presence of (I) imparting stability against thermooxidn. such that the compsns. can be processed at above 340 deg. C without mol. wt. redn. of discolouration. .
